This book will be uncomfortable. Depending on what you do all day, it could make you extremely uncomfortable. This is a very good thing, because you deserve it. We all do. to get one of my biggest Gripes about the early reviews of rework is that they had no substance. Words such as “Inspiration,” “brilliant”, and “rethink” in general with my BS alarm, so I really did not know what to expect with reworking. I read a signal to noise, design and usability blog by 37signals, for a few years now, and I’ve had plenty of time to get to know David and Jason style. That should call them by their first names even I know you in style. You notice in writing as in their live Webcasts and Presentations: familiar. Point is, I’ve come to the longest annoyed by these early reviews have been stale. They meant nothing to me. Hopefully, this review is helpful for a lot more to determine whether or not rework your time is worth.

TL, DR version: Buy the book if you do not know what stands for 37signals have. If you expect SVN on paper.

Long Version: If you’ve never heard or read of 37signals Signal to noise and you are a business owner or someone who has a book on the ” Entrepreneurs buy “(Jason and David have preferred the term” starter “), then this is a pretty good book to buy. It is 273 pages, but most of that with a little white space and relevant artwork (almost too much work of art, really) filled, making it easy to read. From beginning to end, I was a little more than a few hours reading rework, and I’m not a speed reader by any stretch of the imagination. Expect to be blown away not by any revolutionary ideas, either. One of the early reviews to come, said: “The clarity, even the genius of this book actually brought me close to tears on several occasions” (Tom Peters, New York Times bestselling author). I do not want to bad mouth the guy because I do not know him, but that is a wicked rad crazy exaggeration. This is a simple book, which is only a by-product of the blog’s. Nothing more, nothing less.

If you are someone who is very familiar with 37signals and spent much time reading the blogs are, it is not like you need to pick up this book immediately . feel Do not get me wrong, $ 12 (or how much it costs when you buy rework) is very worthwhile, if only to have some good night reading. But if you think that rework brings no additional insight into 37signals out what is available online, then you thought wrong. Rework felt like a package of SVN Blog messages by 2007 to 2009. I’ll explain why in a bit.

    The major takeaways:

If you are strapped for cash and still want to take away lessons from this book, read the contents and then cross reference these words with the 37signals blog. Jason and David have a heck of a job as a straightforward about what they are about writing. For example, “ignoring the real world” (page 13) can be found on the website. In fact, a number of their content from rework to be found on its website. Namely, will learn

“from mistakes overrated” (Rework, page 16): “Learning from mistakes is overrated” (3 February 2009) (SVN)
“The planning is Güssing” (Rework, page 19): “The planning Falacy” (June 12, 2009) (SVN)
“workaholism” (Rework, page 25): “Fire the workaholics” (7 . March 2008) (SVN)
“Enough with ‘Entrepreneurs’” (Rework, page 28): “The word entrepreneur and their luggage” (22 April 2009) (SVN)
“Scratch your own itch” (Rework, page 34): “What is your problem?” (Getting Real)
“No time is no excuse” (Rework, page 40): “There is always time to start your dream” (March 10, 2009) (SVN)
, “Outside money is plan Z” (Rework, page 50): “Fund Yourself” (Getting Real)

And this is only the first 50 pages! You see where I’m going with this. Are you an avid reader of 37signals and have them stored for 6-12 months long, then most of what you read in rework is simply a regurgitation of what already be posted online. Therefore, the early reviews are really annoyed me. This book is insightful? Clearly. Is it legendary or tear-worthy? Give me a break! The Grand language is really makes me distrust pounds, and if I did not already knew that the great work 37signals does or if I did not already a long time customer with 37signals, I would not have bought this book. The flowery language of the early reviews I only hope that the world of rework, and all I got was really the shape of the output signal v. noise, with better editing and word choice.

and I would not write this write long, extensive, if not I am passionate about the line of work that 37signals is in. I owe much of my organization and peace of mind to 37signals products, so count me as one of the 37signals “public” members. I think Rework is an extraordinary book that serves as a reminder to have many of the lessons and “recipes”, Jason and David are given over the years. It is definitely worth the money if you do not already have most of the lessons in the rework of contents contained internalized. If you have, and you’re an avid fan of Jason and David have, then there is really no need to read to repair if you have some extra time on your hands.

Jason and David, if one of you actually read this review, I hope your next book in the first trench BS ratings. This is my main gripe. If you want to recycle SVN from 2009-2011 and turn it into a book called improve! in 2012, which is fine by me. I’ll be the first to be in line to read it, but know that I and many other readers who expect the same stuff we have already seen reading on the blog. I love the work you do two, I mean, I really love the work that you have to do two. But come on. Do not put me to the stars, and then throw glitter on my face.

All in all I give a post-10.7. It is worthwhile to read if you do not know what stands for 37signals have. Even if you do this, buy the book for a friend or out-of-touch boss.

“Rework” is one of those books that do not are not self too seriously. It is a fast read. While I do not reveal any revolutionary secrets, I appreciate the authors attitude towards the common business practices. They have built a successful small business. They have avoided the grandiose plans for IPOs, organizational charts that cover entire conference room tables, and all the other BS that normally accompany the “modern tech companies. Her advice is that it is ok to do that. Build a Business, you can use rather than one sale that you can live. They are to do at the end of something that you find worthwhile, instead of always chasing smoke and mirrors. This book is a bit light on substance, but it offers a decent antidote to all the discouraging process and business bureaucracy that plagues. value to read, to be sure, even if only for the distraction.

This book is filled with some great advice for those who want to start their own businesses, have their own businesses or are only interested in the topic.

As a fan of 37 signals the company and a frequent reader of his blog, I was excited when rework was first announced (so excited that I pre-ordered it). From the first descriptions, I was excited to read a full-length book by Jason Fried and David Hansson Heinemeir. My hope was that they expand on the ideas often discussed on her blog, and unfortunately a little more insight on their personal experience in running a very successful small business.

When you start the authors, their blog or their earlier book “Getting Real”, then only very little new about the content in this book. All lessons and I feel like retreads chapters of the earlier material, up to some of the analogies such as “like a boss” or “curator”.

So, while I believe some of the lessons in this book are great, I think it is a 3-star rating, because so few of them deserve to be teaching new material.

On a similar note, I think my biggest gripe here, perhaps with the length of the book: it may seem, at 270 pages, but there are only about 100 pages of actual content in rework. The book is really about 100 or so a page essays, separated by a full-page map between the different sections.

I wanted to be really enthusiastic about this book, read it, but under its previous edition, Unfortunately, I found very little new material to digest and the pictures from sections of the feeling, nothing more than filler.

So, if you are not familiar with 37 signals or her blog, and They dream of one day starting your own business, then this book is filled with great advice. But if you’re with the company, their blog, or “Getting Real”, there is almost nothing new for you.

This book is different than most business books, both in its brevity and message. Many of the ideas are common sense, but much of the business books out there, especially when it comes to startups, stray quite far in favor of the teachings here. Notable among them:

    – Do not remove the investment from outside
    – Do not try to grow indefinitely
    – not always listen to your customers
    – Scratch your own itch

Recently I read a lot of books on business start a small business focus, but this is the first that really tried to be honest, not only dining you hype. Books Business, schools and people like to complicate even on business and I keep planning to rework on my desk as a reality check for me and my business.

I also really appreciate the brevity. Far too many companies (and technical) books are padded with repetition of a few important points, only to get a respectable number of pages. David Jason and respect of our time enough to keep it short and to the point. If you need the refresher, read it again, I know that what I do on the plan!

Download the free excerpt. Read it. You have just read the entire book.

I am disappointed to find out, this book is 10% content, 90% hype.

The main part of the book is white-space or illustrations. I would say that about a third of the pages are real content.

The bulk of the content is a new edition of everything that they say on their blog. I had expected this to some extent, but it was nothing new presented in this book at all. They say pretty much: “Simple is better”, 100 times more than in a 100 different species. Here you will find whole pages devoted to phrases such as “Meetings are toxic.” By the end of the book that you really feel that they fill only against a dead horse to pages.

You would be better off spending time reading the 37signals blog archives.
